1 Day - Watercolour Painting Fundamentals With Tom Chan - June 15, 2026

In this hands-on class, Tom will walk you through the fundamentals of watercolour painting, including:

• Composition: Rule of Thirds, natural framing, background, midground and foreground

• Techniques and Styles: wet-on-wet, dry-brush, loose vs tight (impressionism vs realism), abstract and brush strokes

• Brushes: Flat, round, fan, dagger, angle, liner, filbert (brushes that have water-holding capacity)

• Water Colour Paints: Pan paints, tube paints, semi-moist paints, metallic paints, Pearlescent paints, transparency, semi-transparency, opacity, Gouache, W/C pencils, mixing well, colour wheel, value chart

• Achieving Special Effects: Bottle caps, bread ties, cut-up credit cards, scratcher, twigs, natural sponge, rubbing alcohol, salt, Saran Wrap, wax, white crayon, masking fluid, titanium white gouache, tissue, spray bottle

• Paper: Paper made with cotton (Arches, Winsor-Newton, Fabriano, Strathmore, Canson XL, Baohong Masters), textures (cold, hot, rough press), weight (90, 140, 300 lbs), sizes, sheets, blocks, pads

• Dress-Up Your Art: Matting, framing, float mounting

• Care of Tools: Never leave brushes in a water container, dry brushes with a rag, cover up pans and palette

• A Pan of semi-moist Yarka watercolour

• A roll of masking tape – 1/4 in

• A 5H pencil and a soft eraser

• A ruler

• A natural sponge

• Water containers

• A roll of bathroom tissue

• A small container of table salt

• Titanium white gouache

• A small bottle of masking fluid – optional

• A sheet of Arches watercolour paper
